Elekta

We don’t just build technology. We build hope for everyone dealing with cancer.

Elekta AB is a Swedish company specialized in the design, production and marketing of clinical radiosurgery and radiotherapy systems and solutions for the treatment of cancer and brain disorders. The group also offers software solutions used for image-based medical record management and patient clinical data tracking.

The site in Veenendaal is the world market leader in the development and production of Brachytherapy systems, in which cancer patients are irradiated from the inside with radioactive sources.

Transport is usually by air and must comply with all safety regulations regarding the transport of radioactive goods, as well as international regulations regarding transport. Currently, plastic transport buckets have been chosen for the outer packaging for the shielded radioactive sources. After these buckets with a radioactive source have been delivered to the customer, the customer will return these buckets to the Netherlands with a disused source, and the buckets are currently still unsuitable for reuse due to applied marking and labeling required for transport. Based on our sustainability philosophy, we would like to investigate the possibilities to make the buckets available for reuse.

What are you going to do?

  • Determining the requirements (incl. regulatory and transport requirements) to make the transport packaging reusable.
  • Investigating alternative possibilities to give the buckets a “second life” through recycling
  • Explore other sustainability options that have not yet been explored
  • In all cases, a business plan will have to be submitted to substantiate the proposed options.
  • Due to the many aspects of this research, you will have to deal with various disciplines within our organization and you will also have to approach external contacts.
