Op 4 oktober werd voor de derde keer in successie een seminar georganiseerd over duurzaamheidsverslaggeving door adviesburo DHV, SNS Asset Management en de VBDO. Dit keer stonden niet de richtlijnen van het Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) centraal maar de praktijk van duurzaamheidsverslaggeving. OECD Report: “Corporate Responsibility: Private Initiatives and Public Goals”

Private initiatives for corporate responsibility have been a major development in international management over the last twenty years. The initiatives include issuance of codes of business conduct, implementation of management systems and broader efforts to improve business accountability. Yet, there is little agreement about what these initiatives mean or how effective they are. The OECD project on corporate responsibility seeks to shed light on various aspects of the corporate responsibility movement: What are firms and business associations doing? How have governments influenced the initiatives? Greening the European Commission: Decision on the implementation of the eco-management and audit scheme, EMAS

The European Commission decided today to take further steps to green the institution by adopting a Decision to implement the Community’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, EMAS. The scheme will give the Commission an accurate picture of its environmental impact, improve its environmental performance and provide both organisational and financial benefits. Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström said: “The European Commission will lead by example. With the introduction of EMAS we want to set an example for other public authorities and economic operators to follow, and our final objective is achieving EMAS registration for the European Commission”. Vice-President Neil Kinnock said: “The Commission signalled its awareness of the need for practical action when it launched its Green Housekeeping(1) scheme in 1997. (Gepubliceerd in Het Financieele Dagblad van 18 juni 2001) Thomas Donaldson gaat in op het hoe en waarom van de groei van programma’s voor bedrijfsethiek en onderzoekt of ze al dan niet succes hebben Thomas Donaldson bezet de Mark O. Winkelman-leerstoel aan de Wharton School van de University of Pennsylvania. In de jaren vijftig was het met programma’s voor bedrijfsethiek net als met kolibries. Je zag ze zelden en als je er een zag leek die te kwetsbaar om te overleven. Intussen hebben deze curiosa hun bestendigheid bewezen: ze bloeien en trekken gestaag van hun historische habitat in Europa en de VS naar Azië, Afrika en Latijns Amerika. De meeste van de vijfhonderd grootste Amerikaanse ondernemingen gaan nu prat op een ethische code, en onder een bredere verzameling Amerikaanse bedrijven is het percentage opgelopen tot 80. Uit een recent onderzoek onder ondernemingen die opgenomen zijn in de FTSE 350 en niet-beursgenoteerde bedrijven van vergelijkbare omvang, uitgevoerd door de London Business School en Accenture, bleek dat 78 procent van de respondenten een gedragscode had, vergeleken met 57 procent drie jaar geleden. ... lees meer

Gedragscodes hebben ethisch ondernemen nog niet bevorderd

Wereldwijd hebben tal van bedrijven vrijwillige gedragscodes ondertekend om milieuschade en schendingen van de mensenrechten te voorkomen. De vraag is wat die wirwar van codes nu eigenlijk oplevert. Milieu-activisten en bedrijfsleiders zijn het erover eens dat de bedrijven tekort schieten, maar ruziën over de redenen en de remedies. ... lees meer

Corporate social responsibility: EU launches dialogue on best practice for multinationals

At a two-day conference held in Brussels on May 10 and 11th, the European Commission launched a dialogue on implementing voluntary commitments of good corporate behaviour. The conference entitled “Best business practices for corporate social responsibility : Management tools for implementing the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises” enabled European firms to exchange experiences on their practices at EU level. Pascal Lamy, European Commissioner for Trade, said: ‘ We in the EU have to work together towards corporate citizenship, because we all share the issues and societal objectives at stake.
