The European Commission adopts strategy to promote core labour standards and social governance globally

The European Commission on 18 July adopted a communication proposing an EU strategy to promote core labour standards and social governance globally. The communication proposes action at European and at international levels, to support the effective application of core labour standards at global level. The development dimension is central to the strategy, which aims to help developing countries apply core labour standards for social development. Commenting on the launch of the proposals, Commissioners Pascal Lamy (Trade) and Anna Diamantopoulou (Employment) said : “Citizens feel there is a need for an equitable global economic system which promotes social development and fundamental rights and that our current governance model does not adequately address this. Global market governance has developed more quickly than global social governance. We should rebalance the system to help promote social development and ensure that globalisation benefits all people and all countries.” ... lees meer

(Gepubliceerd in Het Financieele Dagblad van 18 juni 2001) Thomas Donaldson gaat in op het hoe en waarom van de groei van programma’s voor bedrijfsethiek en onderzoekt of ze al dan niet succes hebben Thomas Donaldson bezet de Mark O. Winkelman-leerstoel aan de Wharton School van de University of Pennsylvania. In de jaren vijftig was het met programma’s voor bedrijfsethiek net als met kolibries. Je zag ze zelden en als je er een zag leek die te kwetsbaar om te overleven. Intussen hebben deze curiosa hun bestendigheid bewezen: ze bloeien en trekken gestaag van hun historische habitat in Europa en de VS naar Azië, Afrika en Latijns Amerika. De meeste van de vijfhonderd grootste Amerikaanse ondernemingen gaan nu prat op een ethische code, en onder een bredere verzameling Amerikaanse bedrijven is het percentage opgelopen tot 80. Uit een recent onderzoek onder ondernemingen die opgenomen zijn in de FTSE 350 en niet-beursgenoteerde bedrijven van vergelijkbare omvang, uitgevoerd door de London Business School en Accenture, bleek dat 78 procent van de respondenten een gedragscode had, vergeleken met 57 procent drie jaar geleden. ... lees meer

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has issued a new report that shows how open, transparent markets can drive sustainability. It also makes the business case for implementing sustainable practices. Entitled -Sustainability Through the Market: Seven Keys to Success”, the document outlines seven keys to successful implementation and illustrates the economic benefits of doing so with real-world case studies. The report, four years in the making, was co-authored by Chad Holliday, CEO and Chairman of Dupont (ticker:DD) and current Chairman of the WBCSD, and John E. GRI effort to Measure Social, Environmental and Economic Performance of Companies Receives $3 Million Grant From United Nations Foundation

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has received a grant totaling $3 million over two years from the United Nations Foundation (UNF) to support the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an international effort designed to develop guidelines for measuring the social, environmental and economic performance of multi-national companies.
