Research released today by the Judge Institute of Management, Cambridge’s Business School, suggests that environmental and social credibility will have a significant impact on the future reputation of Multinational corporations.
Within three scenarios of the future business climate (fortress world, market world & transformed world) the CEOs of the Global Fortune 500 were asked to rate the significance of seven elements of reputation to the preservation of a positive corporate reputation.

New research by the Institute of Business Ethics, leaders in promoting corporate ethical best practice, has shown for the first time that companies with a clear commitment to ethical conduct outperform those which do not.
The research is the most thorough study ever carried out in the UK of the relationship between business ethics and business performance in large companies. Using four indicators of business success – economic value added (EVA), market value added (MVA), price/earnings ratio volatility (P/E ratio), and return on capital employed (ROCE) – it compared two groups of companies: those with a demonstrable commitment to ethical behaviour through having a published code of business ethics, and those without. Their performances were then analysed over the five years 1997-2001. On three of the four indicators (EVA, MVA, P/E) the companies with codes were clearly superior, and on ROCE the results were less clear but supported the overall trend.

Ondanks de beursmalaise wint duurzaam beleggen terrein bij de pensioenfondsen. Maar een goed milieubeleid weegt niet zo zwaar mee. Corruptie en overtreding van wetten en regels des te meer.
Heeft een pensioenfonds de taak om duurzaam te beleggen? De resultaten van een onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van duurzaam beleggen binnen de Nederlandse pensioenfondsen lijken die vraag met ja te beantwoorden. De Nederlandse beursgenoteerde bedrijven zijn gewaarschuwd. Het onderzoek ‘Tussen meerwaarde en moraal’ van Universiteit Nyenrode en de Vereniging van Beleggingsanalisten laat zien dat bijna 17% van de Nederlandse pensioenfondsen al een beleid heeft ontwikkeld voor duurzaam beleggen, dat zo’n 19% bezig is een beleid te ontwikkelen en dat ongeveer 23% concrete plannen heeft voor beleidsontwikkeling of daarover nadenkt.

Vandaag reikt Piet Hoogendoorn, voorzitter van het Koninklijk NIVRA, de European Sustainability Award uit aan The Co-operative Bank uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De bank ontvangt deze prijs vooral vanwege de wijze waarop alle relevante stakeholders in het maatschappelijk jaarverslag worden geïdentificeerd en voorzien van informatie. Daarnaast gaat het verslag zowel in op de directe als ook op de indirecte gevolgen van de bedrijfsvoering en is het zeer volledig.

De Nederlandse economie krijgt meer ruimte om te groeien als de verhoging van de arbeidsproductiviteit en de arbeidsdeelname bij voorrang worden aangepakt. Nederland moet serieus werk maken van de ‘Lissabon-agenda’. Dat heeft minister-president Balkenende gezegd in een toespraak voor de Economische Faculteitsvereniging Rotterdam.

Vanaf 7 april hangen in grote steden in Nederland posters van de Koffiecoalitie met de slogan -Douwe Egberts is jarig, toch is het geen feest’. Het is de start van de publiekscampagne Arbeidsrechten voor Koffieplukkers van tien Nederlandse organisaties (de Koffiecoalitie), met als doel de omstandigheden op koffieplantages te verbeteren. De Koffiecoalitie wil dat Westerse koffiebranders maatschappelijk verantwoord gaan ondernemen en roept Douwe Egberts, als grootste koffiebrander in Nederland, op om verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor de omstandigheden waaronder koffieplukkers hun werk doen. Zij vraagt DE om de mensonwaardig situatie aan
het begin van de koffieketen niet langer te negeren en zich aan te sluiten bij een goede gedragscode en de koffieproducenten een fatsoenlijke prijs te betalen voor hun product.
