The report was prepared following a formal complaint in August 2002 made by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) and Ecoceanos in Chile to the Punto Nacional de Contacto (PNC), the national contact point for OECD in Chile.
Marine Harvest Chile cooperated fully with the PNC during its investigation in order to provide all the information required. “The final report shows that the serious allegations of these NGOs were unfounded,” commented Andres Johnson, General Manager of Marine Harvest Chile. The report also clearly shows fish farming in Chile is subject to formal regulation.
The PNC recommends a dialogue with stakeholders, coordinated by the authorities. “We will cooperate fully in this dialogue,” continued Andres Johnson, adding, “It is a relevant part of the objectives of Marine Harvest Chile, as a Nutreco business. We have already been developing dialogue with government representatives and interested stakeholders. There are several such initiatives by the salmon industry in the Xth Region and we are participating in most of them.”
