Greenpeace activists are protesting about 20 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum against the climate-damaging extraction of fossil gas. The activists from Germany and the Netherlands are circling the gas drilling platform (Jackup rig) “Prospector 1” in rubber boats. Some of them have climbed onto the platform and have attached themselves to the legs. Flags and banners read “Gas zerstört!” (Gas destroys!) and “No New Gas”. The Dutch energy company One Dyas wants to exploit the N-05A natural gas field at this location. A Dutch court had initially stopped the drilling project for over a year. Since May 31, 2024, a new drilling permit has been in place. The intended location for the platform is 500 meters behind the German border on Dutch territory between the islands of Schiermonnikoog and Borkum. In the immediate vicinity is the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea. Near the drilling site and along the cable route intended for its power supply, there are unique, protected stone reefs that Greenpeace first scientifically documented in 2023.

Die Klimaschützer:innen aus Deutschland und den Niederlanden umrunden die Gasbohrplattform “Prospektor 1” in Schlauchbooten. Einige von ihnen sind auf die Plattform geklettert und haben sich an den Standbeinen festgemacht. Auf Flaggen und Bannern steht “Gas zerstört!” und “No New Gas”. Der niederländische Energiekonzern One Dyas will an dieser Stelle das Erdgasfeld N-05A ausbeuten. Ein niederländisches Gericht hatte das Bohrvorhaben zunächst über ein Jahr lang gestoppt. Seit dem 31.05.2024 liegt nun eine neue Bohrgenehmigung vor. Der vorgesehene Standort für die Plattform befindet sich 500 Meter hinter der deutschen Grenze auf niederländischem Gebiet zwischen den Inseln Schiermonnikoog und Borkum.
