The book “Managing the Transition to a Sustainable Enterprise: Lessons from Frontrunner companies”, was published by global publisher Routledge last week and is now available for an international audience. The book is jointly written and researched by Royal HaskoningDHV consultants Rob van Tilburg and Mara Francken, and Rob van Tulder and Andrea da Rosa from the Partnerships Resource Centre of RSM Erasmus University Rotterdam.
“Managing the transition to a sustainable enterprise” was first published in 2012 in Dutch, initiated by the Foundation for Management Studies (SMS). In combining practice and theory, the book provides a management perspective on the ‘business case’ for sustainability.
Drawing on examples from 20 companies located in the Netherlands, it builds upon a unique research project in which CEOs and middle-managers gave access to their decision-making process. The result is a valuable combination of practice and theory for managers and students that wish to get insight into real-life transition processes towards sustainability.
One of the valuable contributions of this book is the phase model it describes, with four different archetypes of business cases and related business models. Managers can use this to identify the phase their own company is in and can get inspiration for the way forward.
